The leaves are changing…and so is my skin. Fall has finally fallen and it’s time to update that beauty routine to make sure you’re looking fly as ever.
With darker days comes darker makeup, and with dry air comes more moisturizer. Fall is my favourite time of year and changing up my bag with darker colours and creamy products is always fun. But you need to know the essentials before you start stocking up.
Below are the essentials for your best autumnal look.
The Enthusiast’s Beauty Essentials (Fall 2016 Edition)
Fall brings in winds and harsh colds, so keep it easy with your hair and let it have a bit of mess so that you aren’t worrying about any muss when you go outside. Try Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast ($15).
2. Brown mascara
Bring in the autumnal colours with a brown mascara. Brown mascara is slightly less harsh than black and brings out colours in eyes that normally aren’t there, which looks so pretty with all the changes the season brings. Try SEPHORA COLLECTION Full Action Extreme Effect Mascara ($12).
3. Metallic polish
Leave behind the normal dark colours people use for fall and invite some new bright metallics into your nail collection. Try NARS Nail Polish in Pastorale ($20).
4. Deeply penetrating moisturizer
Cold air dries out skin more than anything. And if you already have dry skin it is even more important to keep skin hydrated. Using a moisturizer that deeply penetrates skin and provides moisture all day is necessary this season. Try First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream ($30).
5. Dark red lipstick
A dark red lip catches eyes, but also adds a dash of colour when the days are dark and dreary. Choose one that’s moisturizing and complimentary to your skin tone. Try Rimmel London Lasting Finish in 107 ($5).
While I normally don’t love contouring, it’s great for fall when you can play up the shadows on your face. And you can also dust some bronzer on your cheeks for a little glow when the chill gets strong. Try Urban Decay Beached Bronzer ($28).
7. Volumizing hair product
I love a little volume in my hair, and the best part about autumn is that a little volume is absolutely perfect. The volume keeps your hair looking full and bouncy even when the wind is all up in your head. Try Tresemme Volumizing Mousse ($5).
8. Brown smoky eye
I love neutral eyes during autumn, but keeping it a bit smoky is even better. It adds the warmth yet adds definition. Try Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette ($45).
9. Dewy foundation
Keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated with a dewy foundation. Choose one with a moisturizing base and double check it checks your skin tone. This isn’t summer where you can fudge a bit because of the tan. Autumn is about sticking to your colours. Try Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation ($48).
10. Pink/brown tones
Play off more than just deep reds by adding some pink and browns into your routine. And products that incorporate both colours together – look for dusty rose products – for some beautiful monochromatic looks. Try stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Pantina ($24).
What I love most about highligher is that it instantly gives skin a healthy glow. Mix it into your foundation or apply directly to your face so that you look like you’ve come out of a facial all season long. Try NARS Illuminator in Copacabana or Orgasm ($30).
12. Dark blush
It’s time to put away our peaches and pinks and go for darker reds and raspberries. A light dusting on cheeks brings the right amount of colour and makes sure you look healthy even when the weather has got you down. Try e.l.f. Cosmetics Powder Blush Palette in Dark ($6).
