How to Create a Morning Routine

I love structure. It helps me focus. And starting my day off with a little structure helps maintain a focused, balanced day.

The past few months have been a little hectic for me, what with changing cities and starting my first adult job. But I find that I’m not running around like a headless chicken amongst this chaos when I have my normal morning routine. Which is why I believe everyone needs to find their own routine in order to live the life they want, regardless of life events.

Today I am going to share how I created my own morning routine and some guidelines on how to create your own. Let’s get started.

The Enthusiast’s Guide to Creating the Perfect Morning Routine (For You)

Wake up at the same time every day

In college it’s about waking up in time to get to class and then sleeping until noon on weekends. That just promotes an unhealthy sleep schedule and means getting up in the morning is a hassle. By waking up at the same time your body is used to the time, plus falling asleep will happen easier because your body knows what time it needs to wake up.

Waking up at the same time every day also creates an internal alarm clock that means your body will wake up at the appropriate time, which means no more oversleeping and ruining your whole day.

Spend a little time focusing on your goals

When you make time in the morning with a routine it means you have time to focus on things other than just getting ready. Spend a little time after waking up – whether it’s during your shower or drinking your coffee on the couch – focusing on what you want to accomplish for the day. This will mean you won’t feel like you’re forgetting something when you’re already halfway to work.

Take five minutes to stretch in the morning. There are countless health benefits and it helps get the blood flowing.

Eat foods that keep you full

If you know a bowl of oatmeal is going to keep you full until lunch, eat that every morning. I find that when I stick with a granola bar I’m hungry an hour later, which means my whole morning/day gets ruined until I get something else in my stomach. But when I eat a breakfast sandwich I feel full until my next meal, which means I’m not fatigued or distracted throughout my day.

Take a little time out in the morning to sit down with your filling meal instead of trying to eat at the wheel. It is more relaxing and much safer.

Drink the same amount of caffeine

Some mornings are one cup of coffee mornings, other are three cup mornings. But generally mixing up my caffeine schedule means that on mornings where I don’t need a lot of caffeine my body almost seems intolerant unless I have more.

The trick is to drink your caffeine (I’m a tea drinker, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need my caffeine!) at the same time in the morning. For example, having one cup at 7am. And later, say at 10, if you still need a pick-me-up, you can have another. This method means no coffee tolerance and, for me at least, limited how much caffeine I was sticking in my body each day.

Leave your house at the same time

The biggest issue I had before developing a morning routine was leaving on time. 8:05 was the perfect time, but without a schedule I was leaving at 7:55 or 8:15. Set a time that works best for your morning and then plan what to do between waking up and leaving the house. My schedule is as follows:

5:45am – Wake up, stretch, think about goals/errands for the day

6:00am – Shower

6:15am – Get dressed and dry hair

6:30am – Eat oatmeal (and pack a granola bar for snacking later)

6:40am – Apply makeup and style hair

7:00am – Make sure work bag is packed with any work folders, wallet, water bottle, chai tea to drink on my commute, phone, lunch (if I remember to pack it), and any other little things I like to have on me

7:10am – Head out to bus stop to begin my 45 minute commute to work

In a little less than two hours I accomplish so much and get onto the bus prepared with everything I could need. See, a morning routine really does help.
