As I’ve ventured more into my love of products and beauty in the blog, I often get asked about my routine and what I use on a daily basis. These questions come up enough (and I will read any post that has the words “daily” or “routine” in it) and I’ve finally got a set daily routine so I figured it was time I shared exactly what makes the magic here on The Enthusiast.
From what I use in the shower, to those final finishing touches, here’s exactly how I go from drab to fab on a regular day!
I probably take the shortest showers of anyone I know. 1) Because I am very environmentally conscience and 2) I would rather lay in my bed for 20 minutes post-shower than to stand under water for 20 minutes.
I switch up my shampoos every time (I rarely use the same one twice) and currently I am in love with the one I just bought. It is OGX Ever Straight Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo ($14) and Conditioner ($14). It makes my hair very shiny and healthy, plus my hair has never been so frizz-free! I wash my hair either every day or every other day, depending on the condition it is in.
After shampooing, I have been big on using St. Ives Purifying Sea Salt Body Wash ($3). It leaves my skin very moisturized and exfoliated unlike many other body washes because it targets both.
I end my showers by washing my face. Morning and night I use Clinique Liquid Facial Soap ($17) and it has honestly improved my skin so much in the last four months. It is gentle and removes all the oily gunk from my pores. And if I need to exfoliate I have been adding BFF: Best Face Forever Exfoliating Face Wash ($21) to the rotation and it is gentle, yet rough enough to slop away any dead skin.
And that’s my shower routine!
Once I’m out of the shower that’s where my routine really starts! After drying off I wrap my wet hair in a microfiber towel to keep it out of the way and do a little bit of the drying while I get into my routine.
Because moisturizing straight out of the shower is important, I apply lotion as soon as I towel off. Recently I have been hardcore obsessed with Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Soothe Lotion ($4) because it soaks into skin easily and doesn’t leave any greasy residue. Then I brush my teeth with Crest 3D White Luxe Glamorous White Toothpaste ($4) and considering I’m still using it two years later, I think it’s the greatest toothpaste.
When it comes to my skin, it is my baby. Having great skin is really important to me, so I spend a lot of time giving it proper care in the morning. On the mornings I do use a mask, I am a big fan of Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask to Clear Pores ($26) which I recently found was one of the #1 bestselling masks in America, and I recently added Skinfood Wash Off Black Sugar Mask ($10) because of the amazing exfoliation plus it cleared my skin in two days.
Every day this is what I use on my skin. After cleansing I pour a little bit of Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion ($16.50) on a cotton ball and swipe all over my face. When that dries I apply e.l.f. Eye Refresh ($3) under my eyes to bring a little life after long nights. I finish up my morning routine with St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer ($6) and apply just a little dollop over my skin. It leaves my skin feeling fresh and plump all day, even after sweating and humid climates.
My hair probably takes the longest of any part of my routine, and mostly because my hair is so thick it takes forever to dry.
I remove the microfiber towel and comb through my hair with a wide tooth comb, like the Sephora Collection Tidy: Detangling Comb ($8). Then I apply product. In order, I apply Number 4 Hair Care Blow Dry Lotion ($32), Obliphica Professional Seaberry Hair Serum ($38), and Davines This Is A Sea Salt Spray ($28). This combination gives my hair protection against heat, adds shine, and gives a bit of texture for when I’m too lazy to do much with it. Then I blowdry with my Conair Infiniti PRO Hairdryer ($40) with a roundbrush, like the Sephora Collection Bounce: Medium Round Thermal Ceramic Brush ($20). The hairdryer is powerful enough that my hair is almost completely dry in about 10-15 minutes without airdrying. With airdrying it’s only five minutes.
Once my hair is dry I use my Hot Tools 1-1/4in Marcel Iron ($47) and curl 1-inch sections before running my fingers through it at the end. It leaves me with very natural, loose beach waves with plenty of volume while still being casual enough for my every day life. I don’t use hairspray often, but when I do my go-to is Tresemme Climate Control Finishing Hairspray ($6).
Despite my overflowing makeup bag (seriously, it is it’s own post, request in the comments!) on a regular basis I don’t use a whole lot on my face. 1) Because I’m usually at home on my laptop and 2) My dog would lick it all off.
I apply primer before anything because it’s super great for oily skin. e.l.f. Blemish Control Primer ($6) has been a lifesaver because it honestly melts into my skin. Next I apply a combination of Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation ($48) and e.l.f. Acne Fighting Foundation ($6) and MDSolarSciences Mineral Creme SPF 50 ($30) to my face using Sephora Collection PRO Foundation #47 ($28) because it’s literally the best mattifying, skin-protecting, dewy foundation that stays on my face all day. Under my eyes I blend in e.l.f. Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter ($3) to give life to long nights.
Because I naturally run pale, but have gotten a bit of colour in the summer months, I apply a light sweep of Maybelline Fit Me Bronzer ($6) over my face. At my temples, and blended down, I sweep the highlighter from the Urban Decay Naked Flushed ($32) palette. And for a pop of extremely natural colour (seriously, people think I don’t wear blush) I sweep e.l.f. Blush in Blushing Rose ($3) on the apples of my cheeks. I finish this all with either bareMinerals Matte Foundation ($28) or e.l.f. High Definition Powder ($6) depending on how I feel about the look or the weather.
For my brows I sweep Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel ($24) and use a clean mascara wand to make sure the product is distributed evenly. The joys of having thick brows that just need a bit of shaping.
I’m not too big on eye makeup, so I go for something easy that just improves my eyes in photos. I sweep You’re a Natural from the Tarte Showstopper Clay Palette ($40) over lids to even out the color, making my eyes pop a bit more. If I’m going to be somewhere a little more important, I’ll wet a thin brush – I’m a big lover of my Luxie Flat Definer Brush ($12) – and smudge a darker colour from the Maybelline The Nudes Eyeshadow Palette ($10) along my lashline.
Mascara is the best part of eye makeup, which is why I am all about a good mascara! And instead of just one mascara that I use every day, here are a few I use in rotation for their natural, fantastic look. They are e.l.f. Volumizing & Defining Mascara ($2), Maybelline Volum’ Express Falsies Big Eyes Mascara ($8), CoverGirl The Super Sizer Mascara ($7), and W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara ($22).
If I am going for something a bit nicer, Rimmel London Lasting Finish Lipstick ($5) is a beautiful matte finish that always looks great for hours, or Stila Stay All Day Lasting Lipstick ($24) for something when I’m going to be too busy for touchups.
And that’s my daily routine! Clean my skin, do my hair, and finish it off with a little makeup to look a bit more put together! If you want to see inside my (insanely large) makeup bag leave a note in the comments!
