My Favourite Sun Care for Sensitive Skin

Suns out, skin’s out! With the rising temperatures comes the need for SPF as we get our tan on. I’ve always been one to stay inside during the summer (I’m not a fan of heat) but the longer I live in Portland the more I crave being outside when it’s sunny. I’ve upped my sun care routine for not only protection, but to not make my extremely sensitive skin break out. It’s taken a lot of trial and error (and several Spring breakouts) but I finally have products that will keep me protected all summer long.

Banana Boat Sport Performance Coolzone Sunscreen Spray – SPF 50

Growing up, we always had this sunscreen in the house. Between my dad being on the golf course and my brother playing sports, sunscreen is a Hegarty family stock option. This one has never made me break out and has prevented many burns. For $7 it’s a steal.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Spray Lotion – SPF 60

For a pricier option (that you can still pick up at Target!) La Roche-Posay makes an amazing sunscreen. Lightweight, non-irritating, and very protective, for only $36 you can feel like you’re not even wearing sunscreen and not get a sunburn. The facial variant is also a great choice. Neither has broken me out on my adventures in the sun.

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Liquid Face Sunscreen – SPF 50

Neutrogena facial sunscreen has been a cult favourite for years…unless you have sensitive skin. Years of borrowing my mom’s lead to breakouts whenever I had a day in the sun. This sensitive skin formula has just as much protection and leaves my skin nice and clear after outdoor activities. It’s light enough to wear every day (because you should wear SPF every day!) and for $10 it’s affordable to add to your daily routine.

MDSolarSciences Mineral Creme Broad Spectrum – SPF 50

After receiving a sample of this a few years ago, I knew I had to add it to my regimen. While not formulated for oily skin, it’s never made me break out or feel like an oil slick, and my sensitive skin feels nourished all day. For 4 oz it’s $42 – and if the budget-friendly version is $10 for 1 oz, you can definitely compare those prices and justify the price. I have never loved a facial sunscreen more.
