My Improved Morning Routine

I have always been a morning person. I was the first to wake up at sleepovers, and was always up watching VH1 at 5am while my dad worked out. It’s a big part of who I am. But even the most morning-est morning person needs a routine, or the whole point of getting up early is ruined. As an adult, I have had to shift how I spend my mornings, but I think I’ve finally figured it out. Mornings are about relaxing, energizing, and getting out of the door at the right time. Here’s how I do it!

The older I get, the earlier my day starts. I generally wake up between 5 and 6, and try to be out my door before 7. It’s a small window, but so much can be accomplished by preparing the night before. To get there, I shower at night, lay out clothes, and make sure anything that needs to come with me is by the door. And now I’m ready to wake up waaaaay too early (in this case 5:30AM).

My Improved 2019 Morning Routine

5:30AM

Wake up and do a quick stretch. If I know I have a busy day I will do a quick 15-30 minute barre session to get some activity in. Otherwise I will jump right into getting ready.

5:45AM

In the bathroom, I will brush my teeth, wash my face (and apply sunscreen), and plop some dry shampoo in my hair. I’ll also start drinking a bottle of water (I like to get about 20-30 ounces in before I head out the door) and make my bed.

6:00AM

I’ve adopted a very minimalist beauty routine, so I’ll pop on a light tinted moisturizer, eyebrow pencil, and mascara and call it a day. For my hair, loose waves or a wispy bun are my go-tos and take only minutes to put together. Not only is this very time efficient, but the look feels more me. Embracing what I naturally look like has changed my self-esteem and made me feel more comfortable in day-to-day life. I save special days – like important meetings, events, dates – for when I need to really up my look and spend significant time in front of the mirror.

6:20AM

I pull on the clothes I chose the night before and add accessories. Lately I’ve been gravitating toward cuffed jeans (my staple), loose tops, and a punchy gold earring.

6:30AM

Time for breakfast! Something quick and filling is a priority. Blue cheese scrambled eggs with fruit, or a smoothie, has become a favourite and takes no time. While I’m cooking I drink more of my water and look up the weather, current events, traffic, etc. that I may need to know before work.

While I’m eating I try to relax. Pulling up an episode of a favourite show (who else is excited for Queer Eye Season 3?) is easily the best way to do this. I try to be a mindful eater, but sometimes losing myself in an episode allows my brain to take that little break before we go into business mode.

6:50AM Once I’m done eating, dishes go in the sink and it’s time to get moving. I make sure my bag is packed and pop on shoes, ready to explore the world! In my car, I like to play 60s rock or soundtracks to really pump me up for the day. My 20-minute commute is one of the best parts of my morning, as it excites me for what’s to come, while also allowing a place of contemplation when I inevitably get stuck in traffic.
