The 5 Best Foundations for Oily Skin (By Someone with Oily Skin and a Real Budget)

Oh the joys of having oily skin!

And by joys I mean the complete and utter pain and despair that comes with making your skin look nice. It isn’t easy. Between the enlarged pores, the gross sheen of sweat, and the impossibility of finding the perfect foundation, I believe all oily skin people should be given awards or free treatments.

I’m just saying…

However, as someone with extremely oily skin I am always on the lookout for a great foundation that does at least one (if not all) of these things:

  1. Provides coverage of all discoloured spots

  2. Fills in my pores

  3. Stays on through the oil and sweat

  4. Provides a matte coverage that only looks dewy after a long day

If I can find a foundation that hits all four target areas then I am very happy. And after a lot of trial and error I have actually found five that I think are pretty great. And they are all different price ranges, so at least something will be affordable for everyone!

So here’s my list of the foundations that I believe will be the end of all gross, slidy foundation for oily skin owners!

The 5 Best Foundations for Oily Skin (you can thank me later)

1. Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation ($48)

I bought this foundation after receiving a sample and really didn’t think it would do much other than just provide my skin with a nice glow. But honestly, this foundation is magic, and it’s not even for oily skin! I put a normal amount on my skin and dust with powder and it literally stays in place all day, even when I’ve been walking in the sun! I love that it provides such a lovely glow to my skin, while still making my skin look poreless. This is always worth my money.

2. e.l.f. Acne Fighting Foundation ($6)

By far the most affordable foundation ever, I’ve recently been putting this on my face every day. It’s been really 100 every day here in Oregon and we’re all sweating cows. And between the 25 minute commute to and from work, plus the amount of running up and down stairs I do on a 9-hour shift, I need something that looks great even after I finish my day. This foundation does not move one ounce all day and covers every little spot (not to mention has salicylic acid to help acne) and is matte from start to finish. Even when I was hardcore sweating I only got a little dewy glow that I got tons of compliments on. For the price and product I would highly recommend this to everyone. And for a more light coverage, mix a bit of sunscreen for sun protection and more sheer coverage.

3. bareMinerals Matte Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($28.50)

I have been using bareMinerals for years and everyone knows it is a superior brand. I started using this foundation about a year ago and it’s even better than their normal powder foundation. Not only does it provide an actual matte coverage, but the colour is pigmented and mixes in with my regular skin to look normal. And when put on right after moisturizer it make skin look dewy and natural, which is truly beautiful looking. I love that it doesn’t sweat off after a long day either, which is what most powder foundations do. I normally put this on after I put on a foundation that isn’t great for oily skin (Revlon ColorStay, I’m looking at you) and it makes the formula less oily during the day.

4. NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation ($48)

I am a NARS addict, so it’s no surprise this is here. I had heard a lot of mixed reviews, but when I tried a sample size I found that every day I wore this my skin ended up looking more radiant after a long day of work/class than when I first applied it. It seemed to use the oils from my skin and make a dewy/matte/natural glow. I even forgot I was wearing makeup at certain points in the day my skin felt so lightweight and non-oily. And the best part had to be that my skin didn’t break out the next day even though I fell asleep wearing it (oops!)

5. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation ($7.99)

Maybelline is my favourite drugstore brand and has never let me down (save that one mascara) and this foundation was my biggest test for them. Could it really live up to the hype my more high-end foundations were? I wore this foundation without powder (a very risky move for me) and was treated to the fact that I definitely didn’t need powder with it. It filled in every little pore in my face (all 24 billion of them) and left my skin looking matte and flawless. I wore it on a day where I was just going to be hanging with a friend, so minimal oil, but it remained to be stuck in place even when I was rubbing my nose or cooking. I think this is a great foundation for days when you want a lighter makeup look (it definitely would be too much with powder) I think it’s great for a variety of activities.

By the way, I wanted to mention that most of my photos include lighter skin tone foundations, as in most of my posts. I showcase the foundations I use, and wish that I was able to try out the darker colours for those with gorgeous darker skin. If anyone is interested, I would love to do a collab with someone of darker descent and write a beauty post with them. Email me at if interested!
