The Art of Giving

With only a week to go until Christmas, I have been thinking a lot about the season of giving. What it means to give, to receive, and the healthy balance between the two.

“Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.” – Thomas S. Monson

I love to give. I find joy in gifting, in helping, and in listening. There are few things that make me feel as great as when I am bringing joys to others. But in societal terms we associate money and presents with giving, but there are so many non-material gifts to give during this seasonal time.

The Art of Giving: Gifts Better Than Presents

1. Your time

There is no better gift than your time. Whether it be volunteering or a listening ear, when you give people your time it makes a big impact. Gifts are not about what is convenient for you, so by taking time out of your busy schedule to be there for someone, you are saying a lot more about what they mean to you than a cheese basket does.

2. Your help

Helping as a gift sounds odd, but it is a form of giving. If you’re helping a friend fix a blown tire, or watching a couple’s kids for date night, or spending your Saturday night in a field looking for their wallet, you are offering assistance in a moment of need. You aren’t looking for repayment, or even a thank you, but you want to help that person because they mean something to you and that’s really what the spirit of Christmas is all about.

3. Your sincerity

Sincerity is defined as being free from pretense. That means that you don’t have some hidden agenda or that you are looking to receive something. But how is that a gift? By being present with your loved ones and being with them to genuinely enjoy time together you are giving them the gift of sincerity. The commercialism of Christmas makes us feel that we need bows and toys and lights to feel loved, but at the core of the holiday it is about being with those you love and feeling closer in the time you spend together. Spend time with those you love and that’s the best gift anyone could receive.
