The Process of a Real Life Plot Line

Writers know that plot line is what makes a story interesting. Isn’t the same true of real life too?

Plot line is what drives a story. It’s what motivates characters to do things, what the journey of their life entails, and where the story begins and ends. The plot line is the story. And this applies to just about everything, especially our own “mundane” human lives.

I put mundane in quotation marks not because I am pretentious and use quotes to seem cool, but because our lives are anything but mundane. Despite not skydiving everyday and watching TV being our favourite pastime, each person has a fascinating plot line to their own life. I know, it surprises me too. I spent two weeks watching every episode of Law & Order: SVU.

When writing a story, developing the plot line is the first thing that really sets a story off. Deciding who your characters are, what their conflict is, how it all is resolved, it’s the major process of creating a story, next to actually writing it down! It’s about choosing if your characters are going to ambitious or lazy or make poor decisions or think things through. When writing, you take on the life of those you write about, creating their plot. You decide someone’s future.

And why not do that for yourself?

For the longest time I have been the biggest advocate for taking advantage of your abilities. Ambition and success are important to me, and the drive to make your ambitions your realities is, in my opinion, an important trait. Being able to choose your own plot line and work to write it is the best thing you can do for yourself. And because I know a lot of people struggle with writing their own plot line due to pre-written complications, I have made a little list on ways to start writing your own plot line.

How to Make Your Own Plot Line Like You Are J.K. Rowling

  1. Visualize your plot line

Like all good writers, you need to have an idea in mind of what you want to happen in your story. Do you want to start your own business? Live at home? Get a promotion? Make a mental image of what you want to accomplish in your plot line so you can start making it a reality!

  1. Make a list of your steps: Beginning, Climax, and Ending

All good stories have the simple plot structure of a beginning, a climax, and an ending. Come on, we all took elementary english. And when making your ambitions your reality it’s all about following this simple structure. With your plot line visualized, make a list of how you’ll accomplish it. One of my plot lines is to finish the re-write of the first novel I wrote and self-publish. For this I will make the steps of

1. Decide how many chapters are wanted and what each chapter will entail 2. Write actual novel & edit 3. Go through process of self-publishing

See, it’s all about having the steps to make it a reality.

  1. Find support

Find some friends or family who will support you in your plot line. Find someone who will motivate you to continue through even when the going gets tough. Some days writing my re-write is an absolute pain, but I put my re-write on Wattpad so I have a whole community of writers to remind me how much I want to do this.

  1. It’s a reality!

Work your hardest to make your dream plot line your reality plot line. Putting the effort in and pulling through until the ends makes the whole spectacle worth it that much more. You’ve made it through your story, go you!

I hope these will encourage you to start making your own plot line and making it how your life actually is! I know I definitely want to see my re-write finished because of all the work I’ve put into it.

Hopefully you all enjoyed this post. I’ve been trying this 3 days a week posting thing and I think it’s working well. Any comments or suggestions?

I’ll talk to you guys on Friday for my July Q&A post! If you have any questions make sure to leave them in the comments to be answered!
