What do you do when the strongest, kindest person you know has one wish and you know, with the help of the internet, you can make it happen?
Kathryn “Senora” Youngman is the Spanish teacher at Pendleton High School in Pendleton, OR (*psst* where I went to high school). She teaches students Spanish, but she also teaches them lessons in faith, kindness, and how to overall spread joy into the world. As someone who took French in high school, I was still shown Senora Youngman’s incredible kindness by how she greeted me in the hallway between every passing period, learned my name through my friend’s in her class, and spent time getting to know me in Foreign Language Club. And only someone that fantastic could impact me that much despite never once sitting in her class.
Currently Senora Youngman is serving her third battle with cancer. I write this trying not to cry because it really is a battle because she is the fieriest fighter you’ve ever seen. Watching her work a room with a quick voice and a kind heart is truly inspirational and there’s no one more fun to sit in a classroom with. My younger brother is taking her class now and he’ll confirm that her class is one of the best. And the fact that she does regular chemo treatments and still arrives at school the next day is spectacular, because the strength Senora Youngman shows is something we should all aspire to. We can only hope to be as strong.
But what does this all have to do with #YoungmanOnEllen? If Senora Youngman could have one wish it would be to meet Ellen Degeneres. Yes, yet another woman who encourages people to be kind! And that’s why the students and parents and teacher and alumni of Pendleton High School are trying to give back a little bit of the kindness she has given us by getting her on Ellen. And that means tweeting and sharing and getting every inch of the internet spread with #YoungmanOnEllen! It’s even trending on Facebook right now!
We want to get Senora Youngman on Ellen because she deserves everything nice in life. She spreads so much love to others (even my own volunteering mother has noticed it in the short time her office has been across the classroom!) and it’s time the world returns some of it back. This woman is amazing and great and the entire world deserves to see her kindness on Ellen!
